Bev and Myrt and the Scrolling of Doom
Melbourne is protected by the OWLS: the Orphic Wise Lady Society. Bev and Myrt are ladies d'un certain âge - married, alien investigators who defend our city from extraterrestrial, supernatural, and other nasty threats. In this sci-fi comedy romp, our beloved elder citizens face a double mission: shut down a sinister new mobile phone company planning to absorb people's brains to power the ultimate AI platform, while also making it to an important dinner date--meeting their son's new boyfriend. "Bev and Myrt and the Scrolling of Doom" is a tale of how working mums save the day, both in the workplace and at home. David Innes has written a number of short plays for Melbourne International Comedy Festival and Adelaide Fringe Festival, including adaptations of "Dracula" and "Journey to the Centre of the Earth". This will be the first play produced by How Delightful Theatre - a company that's all about producing works that are fun, entertaining and have heart. This play is a piece that blends the absurd and the sincere: a show where older queer characters aren't sidekicks or footnotes, but powerful, complex heroes. This show celebrates queer mums, queer dads, grans, uncles and aunts--the people who raised us, fought for us, and continue to protect us. They've survived decades of erasure and adversity, and in this show, they get to save the day. This is a show for audiences who rarely get to see themselves represented in this way, especially older queer audiences, who deserve something joyful, something made for them.
