MQFF Presents: Midsumma Movies - Bottoms
Director Emma Seligman has chased down her 2020 debut, Shiva Baby with probably the most uproarious, subversive, satirical high-school black comedy since Heathers. Unpopular senior-year lesbian besties PJ (Rachel Sennott, also the film’s co-writer with Seligman) and Josie (Ayo Edebiri) hit upon a brilliant scheme to lose their virginity to the unattainable cheerleaders they’re crushing on – they’ll set up a fight club for aggrieved girls to let rip with their pent-up frustrations with men. What could possibly go wrong?
With a score by Charli XCX and Leo Birenberg dripping in ‘80s synth stylings, and with supporting turns from former NFL star Marshawn Lynch, Ruby Cruz, Kaia Gerber and Red, White & Royal Blue’s Nicholas Galitzine, the increasingly unhinged Bottoms doesn’t simply queer the John Hughes comedies of yesteryear; it mercilessly tears them – and itself! – another one...
“A HIGH-SCHOOL COMEDY THAT IS BRAZENLY GONZO, SCALDINGLY AND AT TIMES EVEN DEMENTEDLY OVER-THE-TOP, AND ACTUALLY ABOUT SOMETHING” – OWEN GLEIBERMAN, VARIETY
