A Body at Work

Serial nudist, Frankie van Kan (AKA Frankie Valentine--Stripped Queer, Club Briefs, Baby Got Back, Seen & Heard Cabaret) achieves the improbable task of exposing more of herself than ever before, in this deeply intimate piece of confessional theatre. Dubbed "A dynamite piece of theatre" by ArtsHub, A Body at Work, directed by theatre Alumni Maude Davey, is the tale of a queer woman's seventeen years, and counting, in the sex industry.
Beginning in a strip club, with insightfully refreshing antics of strip club culture and the perceived power dynamics between workers and clients, Frankie unpacks her own whorephobia and the unravelling of boundaries. As she regales you with stories of the body as a commodity and navigating queerness in this honest, humorous and heartfelt journey, Frankie asks the question--will they love me at my Madonna when they've relished me at my whore?
"A Body at Work is a dynamite piece of theatre * * * * * -- ARTS HUB
"Van Kan's writing is poetic and lyrical... exhilarating choreography" * * * * 1/2 -- InReview
"A powerful stage presence" -- Stage whispers
"feminist and perverse" -- Second Sighter
"A Body at Work offers a humanist and deeply personal perspective on sex work... A very moving experience" * * * * -- The Clothesline

AIDS Memorial Garden Tour

Originally established by Victorian AIDS Council volunteers over 30 years ago, the AIDS Memorial Garden remains a treasured resource and place of quiet reflection. The Garden is located on the grounds of the old Fairfield Hospital which was responsible for the care of the majority of HIV/AIDS patients in Victoria.
Fairfield Hospital was originally opened in 1904. Diseases treated included typhoid, cholera, scarlet fever and in its final years HIV/AIDS. Despite plans for its closure in the early 1990s, an unprecedented community campaign kept the hospital open. By the time it closed in 1996 it was the last specific infectious diseases hospital in Australia.
In 2004, after the site was acquired by Melbourne Polytechnic Fairfield (previously NMIT), the Garden was transformed into a valuable learning space for Horticulture and Landscape students. Interest in the old hospital grounds was rekindled in recent years with the release of the 2015 movie Holding The Man. This walking tour provides a rare opportunity to have a guided tour by community members who helped to establish the Memorial Garden and had a close relationship with the Fairfield Hospital, from friends to family who had been cared for.

AKOE/AMFI: The Story of a Revolution (*Just to sleep on their chest... ) [MQFF]

In 1977 a group of friends created A.K.O.E. - the Greek Homosexual Liberation Movement. The movement spawned a magazine, Amfi, whose offices at the legendary basement on Zalongou Street were to become a place of refuge and organisation for the Greek queer community until 1990. This astounding documentary presents an insider's view of the queer rights movement in Greece, from nascence and consciousness-raising to agitating for the rights to exist, to happiness, to love. The movement's story is told for the first time by director Iossif Vardakis, who was a member of A.K.O.E. from 1985 to '88, a member of the Amfi editorial team and responsible for the art direction of two of its issues. His beautiful film features a treasure trove of archival footage, music, animation and great use of talking heads, testifying to the challenging political backdrop to A.K.O.E.'s emergence, intra-community rivalries and community prejudice against trans people, and ultimately to the surmounting of such impediments to progress and self-determination.

Avant-Drag! [MQFF]

"A burgeoning, boundary-pushing drag scene has been enlivening Athens in recent years. In Fil Ieropoulos' exhilarating, kaleidoscopic documentary, which enjoyed its World Premiere at the prestigious International Film Festival Rotterdam, you'll meet a tight-knit clutch of ten defiant, determinedly activistic Athenian drag performers who find solace in one another as they dismantle constructs of gender, ethnicity, religion and sexuality in the highly conservative contemporary Greek context. The Orthodox Church retains a lot of control over the Greek body politic, but the Church's patriarchal power is far from the only orthodoxy these inspirational drag artistes are hellbent on challenging... Through the highly politicised antics of Kangela Tromokratisch, Er Libido, Aurora Paola Morado, et al, you'll discover how the art of drag, operating at a few removes from the mainstream reach of the likes of the Drag Race franchises, can still be a radical force at street level to transform reality and create safe spaces for people marginalised in a too-often hostile society."

Compose Queer x Queerstories

Divisi and Queerstories partner to produce Compose Queer x Queerstories. We connect 12 queer composers, some established, some emerging, with 12 queer writers to produce an anthology concert of completely new work.
This project marks the second iteration of Divisi's Compose queer programming - workshopping and developing work by emerging queer composers to tell our stories in new ways. Although there is a thriving amateur queer music scene of community organisations and hobby musicians, there is limited opportunity for composers to express their queerness at a professional level. These programs give voice to tell stories at a professional quality of musical expression.
Don't expect your usual, stuffy, classical music concert.
Expect to be involved, to be moved, to commiserate and celebrate.
Divisi Chamber Singers is a youth-led, not-for-profit organisation that supports early-career creative artists. We strive to break down established norms of classical music through commissioning and performing innovative creative works and projects.
Queerstories, run by Maeve Marsden, has been running events for eight years all around Australia, from Sydney to Melbourne, Hobart to Shepparton, Newcastle to Brisbane, to Albury, Adelaide, Mullumbimby, Mudgee and beyond. Each event, 6 LGBTQI+ storytellers share a tale from their lives, small windows into the magnificence of the queer community, experienced live and recorded for you.
"Precise blending of parts, even at the most demandingly close intervals, plus the bright purity of steady upper voices and the resonance of the lower voices impressed throughout." - Heather Leviston, Classic Melbourne.
"A warm and inviting anthology, Queerstories welcomes you in with open arms and draws you into a rich conversation with some fresh and entertaining LGBTQI+ writers. Let's hope there are more volumes to come." - The AU Review

'He bursts out of backstage like a cum-filled cannonball. A student and prophet of gay culture at its most camp.' - Sydney Arts Guide
'The show shoots from the hip, with acid-tongued bile and Aussie brashness at its finest, but below the surface is poignancy, vulnerability and a search for self. Like all the great performance artists, satirists and provocateurs, there is a powerful, political punch at play.' - Emerson & Ward Productions, Manchester

Day For It

Mother Peta and daughter Kelly venture into the wilderness together; one of them comes out. Hiking Victoria's Great Ocean Walk has been a long-awaited dream for recent empty-nester Peta, who is surprised that her 25-year-old dirt, camping, and spending-time-with-mum-averse daughter has agreed to join her. However, Peta's anticipation is soon overshadowed by the secret Kelly has been keeping, and it's a pretty juicy one. As they are left with nothing to do but walk, Peta must confront a reality she didn't anticipate -- and it's not the only one.
In the world premiere of this heartfelt comedic drama, the duo navigates blisters, identity, tangled tent poles, grief, unexpected detours and an unprecedented amount of time together. Spanning six days and 100 kilometres of rugged coastline, they traverse terrain that is both painfully familiar and completely unknown, until they find themselves standing on the brink of their respective metaphorical cliffs and prepare to leap. The real challenge? Not pushing each other off.
The spiritual offspring of 'Please Like Me' and 'Fun Home,' 'Day For It' delves into familial dynamics and queerness in a muddy, uphill journey that pays homage to the complexities of intergenerational relationships. Originally developed for Gasworks' 2024 Queer Playwriting Awards Showcase and honoured with the inaugural People's Choice Award, 'Day For It' is co-written and directed by Sally Q Davies (she/her), co-written and performed by Anna Lindstedt (she/her), and features performer Roz Hammond (she/her).

Hidden Master: The Legacy of George Platt Lynes [MQFF]

"Always out to his peers and family, trailblazing American photographer George Platt Lynes (1907-1955) captured the zeitgeist of mid-20th century artistic society in his surreal celebrity portraits and extravagant fashion shoots. But to Lynes there was another creative desire: to advance the celebration of the male nude, and those surviving pictures of his male studies, radically explicit for their time, depict more than a surface homoeroticism but rather a deep, sensuous love for and championing of the male form. As an art director, Sam Shahid's portfolio includes remarkable work for Calvin Klein in the early '80s, Banana Republic in the '90s and Abercrombie & Fitch; who better then to bring Lynes' stunning photography from the 1930s through to the '50s to the big screen, and to uncover his long-term friendships with Gertrude Stein and Alfred Kinsey, in a transfixing documentary celebrating his lasting, if undersung, influence as one of the first openly gay, great American artists."

I'm Not Everything I Want to Be [MQFF]

"This testament to a remarkable queer life lived, and for too long unsung, premiered as a Teddy Award contender at the 2024 Berlinale. Klára Tasovská's documentary celebrates "the Nan Goldin of Czechoslovakia", Libuše Jarcovjáková, whose artistic career is newly flourishing. For many years, her autobiographical photography was more an existential pursuit for the artist, rather than one acknowledged by the art world. Her story is extraordinary, from her coming of age amongst the margins of turbulent, 1960s Prague, before taking in periods in West Berlin, Tokyo, Berlin - as the Wall was falling - and Prague again. Jarcovjáková's diary readings, often accompanied by pseudo-stop-motion flurries of her evocative photography, offer precious insights into queer life during and after the Cold War, from both sides of what was once a great, seemingly insurmountable, divide."

Light Light Light [MQFF]

"It's the spring of 1986, and the explosion at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant has been casting an existential pall over a small Finnish village. But there's a ray of light: a friendship born of emotional blackmail enlivens village life for 15-year-old Mariia (Rebekka Baer), after she falsely reports the new girl at school, Mimi (Anni Iikkanen) as an addict after finding drug paraphernalia in the woods. Mimi demands Mariia masquerade as her friend, and their relationship, begun so antagonistically, comes to assume romantic dimensions... Memories of those heady times come flooding back as, 20 years later, Mariia (now played by Laura Birn) returns home to take care of her ailing mother. This gorgeous, only semi-sentimental, coming-of-age festival hit is based on the 2011 novel Valoa Valoa Valoa by Vilja-Tuulia Huotarinen, and boasts gorgeous cinematography and an evocative, dreamy, '80s-flavoured, Euro-pop soundtrack from Joel Melasniemi."

Melanated in Melbourne: Live

Melanated in Melbourne chronicles the lives of co-hosts Nicole and Ri'chard, two Black Americans living in Australia, as they navigate what it means to be a person of colour in the great down under. A delightful mix of insight and humour, the podcast explores working abroad, Australian lingo, racism, culture shock, identity, heartbreak and more. Melanated in Melbourne intentionally amplifies the voices of historically disenfranchised individuals by primarily having LGBTIQA+ people of color, both local and international, come on the show to share their unique stories, with guests ranging from psychologists to drag queens.
While this podcast was created to inform, entertain and inspire Americans of Colour, Australians and people from around the world have caught on and loved the content - and that's what makes the podcast so special: Melanated in Melbourne appeals to the human experience, regardless of origin or ethnicity. Most people can relate to the difficulty of building and maintaining friendships as adults, navigating love and the search for purpose, so they tune in for a laugh, an "aha" moment, and sometimes a good cry. Nicole and Ri'chard's dream is that this podcast will continue to educate others on the Aussie lifestyle and even encourage them to push past their comfort zones and try something similar.
To commemorate the launch of the third season of their show, the Melanated in Melbourne team are planning to host a live podcast during Black History Month and Midsumma. This event is intended to showcase the diverse talents of some of the guests they've had on the show, engage with current listeners and broaden the podcast's reach to share their intersectional stories with the broader Victorian community.

Michael Griffiths - It's a Sin: Songs of Love & Shame

Vale Park, Adelaide, 1987. Michael Griffiths is about to start a new Catholic Secondary School. New uniform. New peer pressure. New everything. He's also trying to navigate his sexuality in a time when the AIDS epidemic was full blown, when the Grim Reaper was on TV every night and homophobia was everywhere. In these times, the coolly melancholic songs of electronic duo Pet Shop Boys - aka Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe - provided solace, and a safe space to explore feeling out of step with the world.
Directed by Dean Bryant (Sweet Charity, Assassins) and featuring Julian Ferraretto on violin and Dylan Paul on double bass, "It's a Sin" sees Griffiths bring his inimitable cabaret style to PSB classics like Rent, Love Comes Quickly, Suburbia, You Only Tell Me You Love Me When You're Drunk, Go West and It's a Sin, linking each song to some of the most important (and sometimes hilarious) episodes, incidents and people in his life. Most movingly of all, it gently but unflinchingly explores the challenges of long-term relationships.
"Effortlessly commanding the keyboard, Griffiths sings and wittily annotates a curated PSB catalogue that maps against the bumpy but blessed arc of his life. Backed by Julian Ferraretto on fiddle and Dylan Paul's thumping double bass, we hear about his unsuccessful attempt to run away from home; the time he first held hands with a man; and how that man became the love of his life." - Sydney Morning Herald
"An instant standing ovation from an audience that had embraced the artist's raw, warts and all invitation to his life's journey." - Limelight

Milo Hartill: Black, Fat and F**gy

At the centre of the Venn diagram of queer, chunky, brown women with the voice of a goddamn angel, you'll find the terrifying talent that is Milo Hartill.
How do you tell the story of a mixed race, fat, bisexual, underwear model, performer and Instagram influencer? You sing the shit out of a fistful of killer songs in a brand spanking new cabaret of course. Straddling pretty much all of the hottest 2024 minorities (take that as you will), Milo's unique perspective has her perfectly placed to unpack the NOW. In her World Premiere new show fresh on the heels of its Sydney season, she delves into personal stories, belts out songs ranging from Mousse T to Nina Simone, and kicks around some undoubtedly controversial opinions on the current state of the influencer, theatre and singing scenes in Australia.

PACKER'S PLAYHOUSE COCKTAIL HOUR

An all drag king sharehouse, in a cost of living crisis, with a hard-ass landlord? What could possibly go wrong?! This group of drag kings have decided to move in together in an attempt to make ends meet. However, their new landlord 'Packer,' a literal dickhead, seems more concerned about sending unsolicited photos of himself to potential matches on Tinder than providing for his tenants. The property-owning prick is pumping the boys for cash and forcing them to pay up rent 6-months in advance. How will they afford rhinestones, pros-aide and wigs in this economic climate and with their tool of a landlord on their backs? Short on cash and facing imminent eviction, the boys are staging a show, putting their large personalities, comedic timing and ridiculous ability to work thrusting into any routine to good use. What better way to come up with the rent than open their doors and put on a comedy cabaret to save the sharehouse? Join us for "Packer's Playhouse Cocktail Hour" a brand new show this Midsumma Festival, where your favourite housemate kings return to the stage for an epic show to save their house. After the break-up of a decade-long relationship that João likens to a TV series that was best to end before it jumped the shark, he's also finding a greatly changed dating landscape a challenge to navigate - even with the help of a pair of perpetually buoyant besties. As he draws upon his romantic misadventures to enliven his screenwriting, an unexpected side-hustle emerges: directing amateur gay erotica. Psycho Beach Party

'Psycho Beach Party' is a twisted mash-up of 1960s beach party movies, B-grade horror flicks, and classic psychological thrillers. Written by Charles Busch, this dark comedy transports audiences to the sun-soaked beaches of Malibu, where the surf isn't the only thing that's up.
Chicklet Forrest is a sweet but socially awkward teenager with dreams of becoming a surfer. But Chicklet isn't your average beach bunny--she's grappling with multiple personalities, each more bizarre than the last. As the local beachgoers prepare for a summer of fun, Chicklet's alter egos begin to emerge, creating a storm of chaos that no one saw coming, taking a quirky cast of characters along for the ride. The play is filled with sharp, witty dialogue, campy humour, and a healthy dose of absurdity, all set against a backdrop of surf culture and 1960s nostalgia.
'Psycho Beach Party' is a riotous romp that blends satire and suspense, poking fun at the cultural tropes of the era while also offering a clever commentary on identity and self-discovery. Whether you're a fan of beach movies, thrillers, or just looking for a laugh, this play promises an unforgettable ride on the wild side of the shore.

Queer Playwriting Award Showcase

Join us for a unique night of fresh excerpts from our top 4 finalists:
Norm Things by Jorja Bentley
It's your first week at the new job, and April is ready to give you the 411 on office gossip, work drinks and the systems that fail us... you know, norm things. But beware - between a morning coffee and a tragedy, you'll be forced to ask - what should normal be? April is ready to tell all, so get ready for your induction.
Much to do with Law, but more to do with Love by Danish Sheikh
"Law". Alienating, incomprehensible, often violent, and for our narrator, the ultimate toxic lover. This lecture-performance intertwines a queer lawyer's story of growing up as an unapprehended felon in India, with the legal battle to decriminalise homosexuality in the country. Through it all, he attempts to answer the question: What's the point of trying to love the law, when the law won't love you back?
White Christmas by Courtney Cavallaro
It's Christmas Day. But it's not just the birth and death of Jesus that a Mother and Daughter will front up to today. There's far more in-house ones to come... White Christmas is a quippy, two hander black comedy that asks us what it means to Mother. To Mother queerly. To Mother a queer child. And was there any hope of doing it with grace, anyway?
Abi Is Missing by Sarah Bell
ABI is fifteen, living in Malabbin and wishing for elsewhere, when one day her parents report her as missing. Malabbin is every town, anywhere in regional Australia. Within minutes, the police have a second missing person case. A seasoned bushy, a man in his prime. Both apparently lost in the same area. Problem is, there are only enough volunteers for one - SEE MARTIN FOR EXTRA SUPPORT LINE FOR THIS SHOW
Be the first to experience new work on stage, hear queer issues and voices, engage with new playwriting talent and have your say in the 2025 Award selection.

Scarecrow in a Garden of Cucumbers [MQFF]

"One of the campiest and most unhinged of all queer movie musicals, Scarecrow in a Garden of Cucumbers was restored by the Academy Film Archive in 2022 after scarcely being seen since premiering 50 years prior. Presumed lost for much of that time, it now rates as one of the greatest film rediscoveries in many a long year. How on Earth did something so brilliantly, ceaselessly bonkers as this, and so much fun to watch with a crowd, ever retreat into obscurity? In one of the earliest lead roles granted to a trans performer, Warhol Superstar Holly Woodlawn (seen in the recently deceased Paul Morrissey's Trash and Women in Revolt!) puts in a riotous turn as small-town girl Eve Harrington, who quickly finds life in New York City circa 1972 sure ain't like being in Kansas anymore, as she embarks upon a riotous series of loopy, cartoonish, gag-filled episodes and madcap musical numbers. Woodlawn's ferocious fellow Warhol Superstar Tally Brown chews no small amount of scenery as Mary Poppins, and the mayhem is only enhanced by voice cameos from none other than Bette Midler and Lily Tomlin!"

Small Acts of Resistance

The world seems hopelessly stuck, repeating the mistakes of the past. We push ever closer to self-destruction through war, climate change, capitalism, and ongoing injustice for marginalised communities. Yet, there is always hope--slivers of light shining through the cracks in the facade.
Created by a female and gender-diverse ensemble from Women's Circus, with members in their 50s, 60s and 70s, Small Acts of Resistance explores the need for hope in a world where protest and the voices of the disenfranchised are continually ignored. Blending inspiring circus and the soulful energy of live music and spoken word, we question why the lessons of the past are seemingly forgotten and how small acts of kindness, resistance, and hope can promote change. As proud members of the LGBTQIA+ community, fighting injustice is part of our DNA, and Women's Circus has been championing women's rights and empowering people of a marginalised gender for over 30 years.
Bringing you defying acrobalance, inspiring aerials and feats of circus, this incredible cast embraces both the gravity and joy of what it means to be alive and striving for change. Small Acts of Resistance is a poignantly humorous celebration of our community's intellect, kindness, passion, and empathy, complete with all the messiness and contradictions that make us human.

The Queer Kingdom: A Staged Reading

Experience the first full reading of The Queer Kingdom by Tom Ballard, winner of the 2024 QPAS Award. Be part of the development process towards presenting a premiere production in 2026, meet the artists and share your feedback.
In 2004, a group of radical queer activists boarded a seaplane they'd christened The Gayflower, flew 200 nautical miles off the coast of Queensland and landed on a tiny patch of sand and grass in the middle of the ocean. It was here that Emperor Dale Parker Anderson I would plant his rainbow flag and officially declare the claiming of "The Gay & Lesbian Kingdom of the Coral Sea Islands'' - a gay nation independent of homophobic Australia, where there was marriage equality for all, the currency was the pink dollar and the national anthem was Gloria Gaynor's I Am What I Am.
Playwright, Tom Ballard says: "I want to write a funny, joyous play that tells the story of this fascinating queer protest - its history, its characters and its politics - and interrogates what it means for Australian queers today. Would we all just be better off escaping to our own separate queer paradise?"

The Wiz [MQFF]

"This landmark 1978 film adaptation of the Broadway musical of the same name is an all-Black, Afrofuturist reimagining of The Wizard of Oz - and how! With our queen, Diana Ross (soon to record "I'm Coming Out") as Dorothy, heading an all-star cast including a teenaged, pre-solo career Michael Jackson, legendary singer, actor and civil rights activist, Lena Horne, America's "poet laureate of television"", Nipsey Russell and iconic comedian Richard Pryor - that's how! The legendariness far from ends there, mind you - produced by Universal Pictures and Motown Productions, The Wiz was scored by 28-times(!) Grammy Award-winner Quincy Jones, and boasts a soundtrack of glorious gospel, soul and R&B-infused bangers. Director Sidney Lumet - ever one of the most socially engaged of Hollywood filmmakers, known for 12 Angry Men (1957) and Network (1976) - was among the first Hollywood filmmakers to provide sympathetic, nuanced representations of out gay/bisexual and trans characters in 1975's Dog Day Afternoon. Here he piloted the production of a film that "in the 'Emerald City Sequence' alone has informed everything from the black queer ballroom scene to Béyonce" (Gerrick D. Kennedy, Los Angeles Times)." To Wong Foo, Thanks For Everything, Julie Newmar [MQFF]

"Now that our Priscilla has turned 30, we can turn our eyes towards that other mid-'90s, cult classic, drag queen road trip comedy, which is also about to enjoy that same anniversary. For Hugo Weaving, Guy Pearce and Terence Stamp, substitute Wesley Snipes, Patrick Swayze and John Leguizamo; for Alice Springs, think Tinseltown itself. Vida Boheme (Swayze) and Noxeema Jackson (Snipes) are elite Manhattan queens bound for a drag pageant in Hollywood in a yellow '67 Cadillac convertible. After taking hapless drag newbie Chi-Chi Rodriguez (Leguizamo) under their wings, they find themselves stranded in a small Midwestern town, where an almighty charm offensive will be required to win over the sometimes unwelcoming locals. Director Beeban Kidron (also known for Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason (2004) and, these days, a Baroness, officially) worked with an extraordinary cast - Swayze and Leguizamo were both nominated for Golden Globes - which was boosted by the legendary Stockard Channing and a dazzling array of starry cameos, from Robin Williams and Quentin Crisp to a pre-Drag Race RuPaul and a certain Catwoman of yesteryear... Truth to Power Café

"A priceless repository of living social history, wit, wisdom and defiance."***** - Attitude Magazine, UK
"A stunning work of theatrical activism."***** - The Queer Review, New York
From Adelaide to Zagreb and now at Theatre Works for its Melbourne premiere, Jeremy Goldstein's Truth to Power Café is a profound theatrical reflection on loss, hope, and resistance.
This award-winning international performance event is told through memoir, image, film, poetry, music, and compassionate truth-telling in response to the question: 'who has power over you and what do you want to say to them?'
Personal, professional, political - speaking truth to power is a non-violent means of conflict resolution, the origins of which lie in the anti-war movement. Is it to your parents, a sibling, politician, lover, landlord, neighbour, banker, boss, or simply your best friend? It's time to tell them the truth before it's too late.
Truth to Power Café is inspired by the political and philosophical beliefs of Nobel Prize-winning playwright Harold Pinter and his inner Jewish circle "The Hackney Gang", who included Jeremy's late father, Mick Goldstein, and poet/actor Henry Woolf.
OPEN CALL/EOI FOR PARTICIPANTS:
We're seeking 24 people of all ages, experiences and backgrounds for this special Midsumma edition. To take part, send us 100 words in response to the question 'who has power over you and what do you want to say to them?' by Friday 10 January 2025. All submissions to: https://www.truthtopower.co.uk/signupnow Participants are remunerated. Terms and conditions apply.

Woman of... [MQFF]

"One of the greatest contemporary Polish filmmakers, Małgorzata Szumowska (Mug, 2018, and the Teddy Award-winning In the Name of, 2013), here shares directing duties with brilliant cinematographer Michał Englert (as with 2020's Never Gonna Snow Again), to tell a story spanning 45 years of beleaguered trans woman Aniela Wesoły's life, against a backdrop of Poland's transition from communism to capitalism. Mateusz Wieclawek and Małgorzata Hajewska-Krzysztofik (a dead ringer for Judith Butler!) are both superb as Aniela at different challenging stages in her life, in a famously Catholic nation staunchly hostile to the gender non-conforming. Augmented by a great turn from Cold War's Joanna Kulig, this hugely compassionate film doesn't sugarcoat a lot of harsh Polish realities, but also makes no bones about whom it wishes the audience to feel solidarity with. (Pun intended, per the film's title, which alludes to Andrzej Wajda's labour movement-exalting classics, Man of Iron and Man of Marble.)"

Ziegfeld Boy: De-Nuded

For once, Ziegfeld Boy is stripping away everything BUT his clothes. This time there'll be no quick costume changes, no backup boys and no extravagant choreography. With classic tunes like Moon River, The Windmills of Your Mind, Nature Boy and Diamonds are Forever, this cabaret will take you on a fabulous journey of haunting melodies and sublime lyrics. Accompanied by just a piano, the only thing Ziegfeld Boy will be baring in this show is his soul. Okay, and maybe a touch of skin too!

The night before a tell-all article outing him is set to be published, Harry looks for the furthest place from the footy field he can find. The cabaret stage. Hera Björk - The Queen of Effing Everything

Join the Queen of Icelandic Eurovision, Hera Björk, as she ditches her snow boots and dons her thongs in preparation for her maiden Australian tour in 2025!
The self-titled, tongue-in-cheek Queen of Effing Everything is a fierce one-woman cabaret show that dives head first into the life of a Eurovision living legend, sharing hilarious candid stories of how a modest young Icelandic woman became the unofficial 'mother' of the Song Contest. A two-time representative for Iceland (2010 and 2024), Hera relives the highs and lows (and shares some saucy secrets) of the Eurovision inner circle, including the side-splitting antics you can have as an Icelandic backing singer.
An evening of songs and stories, this is a not-to-be-missed intimate insight into the life of Iceland's unofficial leading lady, who is as comfortable in gumboots as she is in glittering gowns. The show is a dirt-dishing musical monologue on how a young girl from Reykjavík dreamed of becoming an Olympic gymnast, but instead succeeded in shaping her life as a go-getting, toilet-scrubbing Diva of the Eurovision scene: The Queen of Effing Everything, in her own words!
There will be laughs, there will be songs, and yes, there will be plenty of Eurovision. The Queen of Effing Everything is filled with honesty and charm that has something for everyone.
Audience sizes are limited, giving everyone the best seats in the house as they get an up-close glimpse into everything Eurovision.

Make yourselves comfortable and get ready for a night filled with laughter, charisma, and pure entertainment as our talented housemates bring you into their good room at Grouse Melbourne for a wild ride of comedy, shenanigans and specialty cocktails. Whether you're a long-time fan or new to the world of drag kings, this is your chance to experience the magic of Packer's Playhouse in an intimate, welcoming atmosphere.

Perfect Endings [MQFF]

"This sultry, delightful crowd-pleaser from Daniel Ribeiro, director of the fondly remembered MQFF 2015 Opening Night film, The Way He Looks, concerns aspiring screenwriter João (Artur Volpi), who's struggling to realise his cinematic dreams and, not unrelatedly, to keep afloat. But will this prove the only domain in which João will find the happy endings he's so hankering after?"

TROUGH XX 20TH ANNIVERSARY 2005-2025

TROUGH celebrates 20 YEARS of shaking up the sex-positive gay dance scene - from its bold, yet humble beginnings in the basement of INFLATION (Geddes Lane) to Melbourne's most legendary men's cruise club CLUB80.
Co-founder Nik Dimopoulos, has devoted two long decades creating contemporary and boundary breaking fetish & kink photographic and video art promo material - as well as producing sex-positive parties that have pushed and advocated for under-represented queer dance music, way back when you could not have heard or experienced this kind of music and event unless you travelled to Berlin in the early 2000's. Over the last 20 years, TROUGH has changed the landscape of clubbing and influenced the current wave of queer, techno, sex positive, dance parties of today.
Come and celebrate this historic moment back at its place of conception - INFLATION. To explore the history and archives of TROUGH Event dating from 2005-2025 and for information on all TROUGH events, please visit www.trough.events

Kennedy, Los Angeles Times)." So there's this party she's having. It might be a funerary rite or a birthday celebration, depending on your perspective. Either way she's wearing the dress, her first lippy, and she's making a special meal. The flowers keep coming and the candles get blown out.
An international collaboration between two transgender writer/performers, UK legend Jo Clifford ('The Gospel According to Jesus, Queen of Heaven') and local emerging artist Bayley Turner, 36 explores the complex relationship gender diverse people have with aging, mortality, grief and growth.
Directed by Kitan Petkovski ('The Inheritance'), with set and costume design by Bethany J Fellows, lighting design by Spencer Herd, and sound design/composition by Rachel Lewindon.

To Wong Foo, Thanks For Everything, Julie Newmar [MQFF]
